The Far Eastern University Tamaraws defeated the Adamson University Soaring Falcons, 67-60, in their Friday meeting at the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Cup at the San Juan Arena.

RR Garcia and Anthony Hargrove led FEU with 12 points each as the Tamaraws improved to 2-1 in Group B. The Falcons, led by Eric Camson's 13 points and 11 rebounds, evened their slate at 1-1.

The Tamaraws, early in the match, took advantage of the Falcons' porous defense by aggressively attacking the basket. Their efforts translated into an early 8-2 lead with all their points coming off drives or inside the shaded lane.

The Falcons did themselves no favors, allowing big man Rodney Brondial to pick up two personal fouls with barely three minutes in the game.

Surprisingly, Adamson's smaller lineup allowed them to defend better, forcing FEU to a spate of turnovers. With more chances to score, the Falcons countered with a 10-2 run, with swingman Roider Cabrera and rookie Ar-Raouf Julkipli draining a pair of three-pointers to grab the lead.

But the Falcons had trouble keeping the lead as the Tamaraws bullied their way to the line to even the score at 15-all after the first 10 minutes.

A Garcia triple opened up FEU's 7-0 scoring in the second period as the Tams continued to take advantage of an inexperienced Adamson squad.

A Camson basket ended the Falcons' scoring drought midway in the game. Adamson's defense responded and held FEU scoreless until the last minute, where Garcia, off a screen, escaped Alex Nuyles' defense and hit a three-pointer from the top of the key.

Arvie Bringas was fouled with three seconds left in the first half. He missed both free throws, but scored again as time expired to put the Tamaraws ahead at the turn, 33-30.

Camson and Nuyles, the main holdovers from last season's roster, combined to score 12 of the Falcons' 15 points in the quarter.

The Tamaraws were relentless in the third, matching every Falcons comeback attempt. Brondial checked back in the game as he muscled his way inside with a pair of baskets and offensive rebounds for his team. But his brief run was answered by Roger Pogoy's four quick points.

Camson scored on a step back jumper in the paint to draw them within two. Chris Tolomia responded with three points, including a scooping reverse layup to give FEU a 46-41 edge. Nuyles made a late push with five points off a set three-pointer and a long two in transition. Russel Escoto answered for the Tamaraws, hitting a long jumper with 15 seconds left in the third to put his team ahead, 48-46.

FEU guard Gyrann Mendoza hit a pair of inside shots to extend the Tams' lead, 54-50 midway in the fourth. Adamson forced the Tamaraws into penalty but could not hit anything from the line, making only 5-of-14 from the stripe in the last quarter.

The Falcons made one last attempt to save the game. Swingman Jericho Cruz hit a three-pointer and a Lloyd Abrigo putback highlighted an 8-2 surge that moved them within two for the last time. But Tolomia hit a three-pointer with 34.7 seconds to go. The Falcons failed to respond as Nuyles missed a jumper from the left wing in their next possession.

The Falcons then stole the ball but immediately turned it over, and were forced to foul Pogoy with 1.6 seconds remaining. He hit the ensuing free throws to seal the win for the Morayta-based squad. — JVP, GMA News
