My Daily Diary: Experiencing Earthquake

Indonesia and the Philippines lie on the Pacific ring of fire, a zone of frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruption

For 21 years of my life, I’ve had experience a lot of natural calamities. It may be earthquake, flood and drought. I had my composure and focus intact. But, last night’s earthquake is different. I was watching television together with my landlady’s daughter when it occurred. We were busy talking about the movie. The rain is pouring hard, thunders and lighting rules the sky. I am not in a familiar territory, I just moved in a month ago. The earthquake started slow, and then it becomes fast. The house is shaking. I can’t think fast, after 10 seconds, the lights went out. I panicked. I started praying. It is the only weapon I know that can counter my fear. My landlady’s daughter keeps on asking me what to do. I just said lets go out. She wants to hide in one of the chairs. I insisted in going out. When I opened the door, the hard pouring rain struck me. We remained in the door. The earthquake lasted more than a minute. It was an unforgettable experience.
The earthquake according to reports is intensity five (5). The quake left one (1) person dead, some trapped, buildings and roads turned. After the incident, I realize we can never hide from these calamities and even fully prepared. They don’t have patterns. They just came at most unexpected time. All we can do is to fully trust God’s moving and guidance. Let’s have faith that everything happens for a reason. We Filipinos are strong. We can make it through. It is just a challenge each Filipino needs to face and surpass. Aja!

Movie Review: The Healing

Watching horror movies is something I like to do. I love watching local and foreign horror movies and try to complain there impact to me. For me, horror movies is one of the hardest to do since it should have full  package- the story (which is very important), sound effects, the artist behind, location and of course the director. If it has the right combination, that horror movie would be a sure hit. Talking about right combination, “The Healing” came to the scene.
The Healing top bills Star for All Season Vilma Santos and Kim Chui. It gives a glimpse of science versus faith. It tackles about faith healers. The story evolves on what happened after The Healing occurred and the mysterious violent death that they faced. As the story progresses, it shows the struggles the struggles of Vilma’s character to stop the violent killings.
For the review, I like the movie. It is not very scary for me since I do not get scared easily. I like the balance of the story- it has heart thumbing, fun and dramatic scenes. The story makes me want to watch it since it is not the usual horror movie. It is the first movie I saw that tackles about doppelganger. The sequencing of the movie as well is not redundant except that for most of the movies directed by Chito Rono like Sukob and Feng Shui the supporting characters die one by one. I really like the character of Vilma’s father –a neutralizer. The raven is a shocker to the viewers.
Over all, the movie is great is great. It is a must watch. The casting is good. Nice one Star Cinema! Congrats to the cast.

My Daily Diary: Going to the Dentist

Ever since I was young, I am really afraid of going to the dentist. I have this idea that they will hurt me because I did not take good care of my teeth so I go on with my life not minding going to them. So now, that I am a grown up, I never thought that it would affect me big time.
I applied for a job and luckily pass. I was given the requirements and one of the requirements is to have dental check up and oral prophylaxis. I got stunned. Suddenly, I have the feeling of withdrawing my application. For three day, I was carefully thinking my actions. To withdraw or not. The job is enticing, I am a fresh graduate and I cannot easily land a job. That’s my first point, not to withdraw. Second is the dentist thing, what if the dentist will suddenly tell me there is something wrong (I don’t know what prophylaxis back then) and the budget thing. It scares me. Second point, to withdraw. My mind is very determined to withdraw. I already got myself to withdraw. But suddenly, my mom came and told me I should pursue it. I saw in her eyes the joy and excitement. I never thought I could get a lot of courage from her. I pursued and everything changed.
I waited for two hours before the dentist arrived. The place is cozy, painted with lavender color is the receiving area. There are lots of magazines. My heart is literally thumbing very fast. A lot of ideas are running through my mind. Many of those are what ifs. I stand my ground; I am doing it for my mother. The dentist came. I’m thankful that the dentist is very approachable. She explained to me everything. Step by step, I took a deep breath. I’m already sure; I’m on the right track. When the prophylaxis started, she keeps on telling me stories to divert me from what she is doing. She has a very soft tone. I got easily comfortable.
The prophylaxis ended. I feel so clean and free. I have conquered my fear.

My Daily Diary: Standing Position

Have you ever tried riding a bus? Sitting comfortably in your seats while watching the outside view, very relaxing right? How about standing position all throughout a 45 minutes trip? Standing position in a bus with the rocky road plus the underarm odor of the person next to you is unimaginable. Whoa, a good treat to ruin a good sunny day, right? How can you describe the trip? Will it be worth it or not a good memory to reminisce?

The trip I had to endure is a 45 minutes trip from Cabadbaran to Butuan City. It was a very early trip since I want to make sure I can arrive to my destination at five pm in the afternoon.  Packed with three bags, I rode the bus, it was full but my mind keeps on telling me, maybe, it will have free seats in the course of the run. It did not happen, I end up standing. It was fine with me at least I can experience it (I never experience standing in a running bus) but what I did not expect is standing with an odorous underarm. It made me feel I want to poke. The underarm of the guy is insanely bad. I don’t know if he ever realizes it. It was the worst part but as if adding insult to injury, the road is under construction and we need to endure the inconvenience it gives me. Luckily, I passed the challenge. I was a bit dizzy when I came to the terminal but all I have in mind is the trip and the experience.

For me, it is a good memory to remember, maybe at the onset of the scenario, I keep on thinking why I did allow it to happen. I should have opted to wait for the next trip. I keep on blaming myself, the many “ifs” endlessly running on my mind. But after I moved on from it, there are a lot of realization came to me. Decisions are really important. It is what molds every person. The choices we would take are crucial; it may hamper or promote our growth. I remember the poem by Robert Frost, “The Road not Taken”.

My Daily Diary: A Day at the Day Care Center

I have always love kids. They are very carefree and lovable in my eyes. Having kids around made me feel I’m one of them (aherm). There carefree attitude is viral and it made me reminisce my childhood.
So when I had a chance to be with kids at the Barangay Day Care Center, I was excited. I will firsthand teach the youngsters how to write the ABC and at the same time assist the assigned teacher in our Barangay. Sounds cool right? When my one day stint started, I was helping the kids write letters C and I. The kids loves to have a grown up around. They want to get assistance from them and that’s what I notice. They seem to get excited when they hear someone is telling them a story and would completely into it when it started. The kids would be oblivious with the surroundings. They just love to play, play and play. And oh, they love to participate in question and answer portions as well! For them there is no right or wrong as long as they can answer the question they will be happy.
Being with the kids made me realize I need sometime to focus to just do what I like and not think of is it right or wrong. At least I’ve tried. I maybe wrong but it would teach me a lesson. The kids thought me that I need to be a good example because the youngsters follow what grown ups do.
Finally, I would always want to reiterate that the children are the hope of our country. Let us teach them well and lead by example. We may not see the impact now but in the future, we will be proud that we did a good job.
